Mobile Phones at Sir William Stanier School
At Sir William Stanier School, we want every student to enjoy a positive, safe and focused school experience. We believe that students learn best when they are fully engaged in their lessons, building friendships and making the most of the opportunities around them.
That's why we operate a mobile phone-free school day.
Our approach is about more than simply putting phones away. It is about creating a school environment where students can concentrate, communicate, develop independence and enjoy being part of our community without the distractions and pressures that mobile phones can sometimes bring.
Why are we a mobile phone-free school?
Mobile phones and social media are a significant part of modern life. While technology has many benefits, we recognise that constant access to phones can sometimes affect young people's learning, relationships and wellbeing.
By removing access to mobile phones during the school day, we want to give students the opportunity to take a break from the online world and focus on the experiences and relationships around them.
Our approach aims to support:
- Learning and concentration: Without the distraction of notifications, messages and social media, students can give their full attention to lessons, participate in learning and make the most of their time in the classroom.
- Mental health and wellbeing: A break from social media and constant online communication can help reduce some of the pressures students may experience around online interactions, comparisons and staying connected.
- Friendships and relationships: We want students to talk, listen, share experiences and develop positive relationships through face-to-face interaction.
- Confidence and social skills: Everyday conversations and interactions provide valuable opportunities for students to develop communication skills, confidence and independence.
- Positive behaviour: A phone-free environment helps reduce potential distractions and conflicts linked to mobile phone use, supporting a calmer and more purposeful school day.
- Positive breaktimes: We want students to enjoy time with their friends, participate in activities and make the most of opportunities beyond the classroom.
Ultimately, we want students to be present, engaged and connected with the people around them.
What does a mobile phone-free school day look like?
All students are expected to bring their designated secure phone pouch to school each day.
On arrival, students place their mobile phone inside their phone pouch in accordance with the school's arrangements. Their phone must remain secured throughout the school day, including:
- During lessons and learning activities.
- At breaktimes.
- During lunchtime.
- Around the school site throughout the day.
Students must not attempt to access, use or remove their phones from their pouches during the school day.
Our expectations are simple: phones are away so that students can focus on learning and enjoy being part of our school community.
Phone Pouches
Every student is expected to bring their designated phone pouch to school each day and take responsibility for looking after it.
The secure, lockable pouch allows students to keep their mobile phones with them while ensuring that they cannot access or use them during the school day.

If a phone pouch is lost or damaged, parents and carers can purchase a replacement directly through the School Phone Pouch replacement portal.
Need a replacement phone pouch?
You can purchase a replacement directly from the School Phone Pouch website.
Supporting Student Wellbeing
We recognise that young people may sometimes find it difficult to manage the pressures associated with mobile phones, social media and online communication.
A mobile phone-free school day provides a regular opportunity to step away from these pressures and focus on the things that matter within school: learning, friendships, positive experiences and personal development.
We want students to develop healthy habits around technology and understand the importance of balancing their online and offline lives.
Our approach is part of our wider commitment to supporting student wellbeing, promoting positive relationships and creating a school culture in which everyone feels safe, valued and included.
If a student has a medical need or an individual circumstance that may require access to a mobile phone during the school day, parents and carers should contact the school to discuss appropriate arrangements.
Keeping in Touch During the School Day
We understand that parents and carers may occasionally need to contact their child during the school day, or that a student may need to get in touch with home.
If you need to contact your child, please telephone the school's main office. We will make sure that messages are passed on and that any necessary communication is managed appropriately.
If a student needs to contact home during the school day, they should speak to a member of staff, who will help them contact their parent or carer through the school.
Students should not use their personal mobile phones to make or receive calls or messages during the school day.
How Parents and Carers Can Support Us
The success of our mobile phone-free school day relies on the support and cooperation of our families.
You can help by:
- Reminding your child to bring their phone pouch to school every day.
- Encouraging your child to follow the school's mobile phone expectations.
- Contacting the school office if you need to get an urgent message to your child.
- Talking with your child about the benefits of taking a break from their phone during the school day.
- Encouraging a healthy balance between screen time, online activity and face-to-face relationships outside school.
We appreciate that this approach may require some adjustment, particularly for students who are used to having their phones readily available. Your encouragement and support will help students understand the reasons behind our approach and make the most of the school day.
Working Together
Our mobile phone-free school day is an important part of creating the positive culture and learning environment we want for every student.
By working together, we can help young people develop positive habits, build stronger relationships, improve their focus and enjoy the many opportunities that school life provides.
Thank you to all our parents, carers and students for supporting this approach.
At Sir William Stanier School, we want every student to switch off from their phone and switch on to learning, friendships and opportunity.
