Overview

Mathematics is one of the core subjects of the curriculum. As such, all students study from Year 7 to 11. This gives us the opportunity to design and use a curriculum that spans these 5 years of study, introducing students to previously unknown areas of mathematics whilst also preparing them for their GCSEs.
We do this using a spiral curriculum that has content retrieval at its core. Each time we encounter a new topic area it is building on a foundation that was previously laid, be that last lesson, last week or last year. Our intent is to support our students in taking the next steps in their mathematical learning journey and preparing them for their own futures.

Year 7

Students follow a three tier scheme of work determined by their entry data.  Their path can alter based upon the progress they display via the regular assessments.

Students will experience work which consolidates and develops their ability to solve mathematical problems.  The aim of the scheme at this stage is to ensure that they have a solid foundation in each of the key areas, number, shape, data and algebra, and that this enables them to develop these skills to a level of mastery at a rate of progression which suits the needs of the individual students’.

Year 8

Students follow a three tier scheme of work determined by their entry data and their progress in year 8.   Their path can alter based upon the progress they display via the regular assessments.

Students are expected to employ the skills developed in year 7 to tackle problems which in turn will enable them to increase their level of mastery in the key areas of number, shape, data and algebra.  The overall expectation is that during this year students will be able to identify which mathematical tool they should use in order to solve problems.

Year 9

Students now enter into a 3 year KS4 scheme of work preparing them for the 9 – 1 GCSE.

They will follow one of a three tier scheme of work in Year 9 based on their current working grade and Maths target grade. Students will cover AQA Mathematics examination specification.

The contents will involve units covering: Number; Algebra; Ratio, proportion and rates of change; Geometry and measures; Probability and statistics.

Students will start to be exposed to exam expectations and the focus of this year is to ensure that students experience maths which extends their mathematical fluency, problem solving and reasoning.

Year 10

Students now will enter into year 2 of the KS4 scheme of work preparing them for the 9 – 1 GCSE.

They will follow one of a three tier scheme of work in Year 10 based on their current working grade and Maths target grade.

The contents will involve units covering:  Number; Algebra; Ratio, proportion and rates of change; Geometry and measures; Probability and statistics.

Students will be assessed using GCSE exam papers providing teachers with the opportunity to produce individual trackers for them and these will form the basis for targeted improvement phases where areas of group and individual weakness will be reviewed and reassessed.

Year 11

Students will enter into the final phase of the 3 year KS4 scheme of work preparing them for the 9 – 1 GCSE.

They will follow one of a three tier scheme of work in Year 11 based on their current working grade and Maths target grade set.

The contents will involve units covering:  Number; Algebra; Ratio, proportion and rates of change; Geometry and measures; Probability and statistics.

Students will regularly be expected to complete exam papers with the aim of tracking progress and ensuring that any areas of weakness are exposed by the individual student tackers and are revisited. The focus of this year is to ensure that students have maximum exposure to mastery questions in order to strengthen and extend their mathematical ability before the exam period.
